Completed Projects

  • Health Care Team Effectiveness (HCTE):   At the Psychological Therapies Research Centre (PTRC), University of Leeds, Anne Rees, Ann Richards and I carried out a study of community mental health teams (CMHTs) within a Department of Health-funded project on which my fellow grant-holders were Michael West (Aston) and Simon Garrod (Glasgow). The members of over 100 CMHTs took part in a survey of team climate, innovation, effectiveness, and staff well-being.  Teams were also profiled via in-depth interviews with co-ordinators.  A subset of CMHTs took part in an intensive analysis of the caseload of representative team members and the clinical outcomes attained.  Recorded decision-making meetings of these same teams were analysed by the Human Communication Research Centre in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
  • Staff Surveys for the Commission for Health Improvement: Together with Michael West and Carol Borrill at Aston Business School, I was commissioned by the Commission for Health Improvement to develop a staff survey for routine use within clinical governance reviews of National Health Service (NHS) organisations. This was the forerunner of the national staff survey developed at Aston for the Healthcare Commission.
  • Mental Health of the National Health Service Workforce: A key data archive arose from a project initiated by Toby Wall, Michael West, Gillian Hardy and myself as colleagues  at the former MRC/ESRC Social and Applied Psychology Unit (SAPU) at the University of Sheffield.  The study was funded by the National Health Service (NHS) Research and Development programme in mental health. A project team headed by Carol Borrill secured unprecedentedly large samples at two surveys, separated by two years, of the same representative sample of English NHS Trusts.
  • Expressed Emotion, Parental Bonding and Psychoeducational Support in Relatives of People with Schizophrenia:  My PhD student, Graham Paley,  analysed the impact of relatives' internal working models of their own parents on their Expressed Emotion status in relation to their schizophrenic family member.  He also developed and piloted a psychoeducational package for relatives and patients, based on Transactional Analysis.
  • Personality Disorder Services: Following PTRC's role in mounting UK training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT),  I consulted with a team of researchers and clinicians at University College London and Camden & Islington mental health services.    This team implemented and evaluated an innovative DBT service model for Cluster B personality disorders. I also consulted with South Warwickshire mental health services in relation to developing and evaluating a DBT service.
  • Advising on job description, person specification and recruitment processes for an innovative post of Head of Professional Development, Psychological Services, Leeds Community and Mental Health Services NHS Trust.  This involved detailed consultation with national leaders, key local stakeholders, and senior staff within the psychological services.
  • Advising on configuration of psychological services to Primary Care Groups across the city of Leeds , including consultation with PCGs, key players within the Health Authority and Community and Mental Health Trust, and the professionals providing psychological services.
  • Psychological Aspects of Cardiac Rehabilitation:  The Cardiology Department of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital , Sheffield , commissioned me to advise on psychological aspects of its rehabilitation programme, in the context of the National Service Framework for CHD.  Aspects I  reviewed included: ways of improving uptake, compliance and effectiveness of the group-based rehabilitation programme; psychological inputs to strengthen the 1:1 service provided by the cardiac rehabilitation nurse; and detection of depression in myocardial infarction (MI) patients.  An immediate outcome of this project was the local Health Authority's inclusion of psychological services into its proposed new city-wide service model for cardiac rehabilitation, leading to the establishment by Psychological Health Sheffield of two new posts.
  • Development of Adult Mental Health Psychological Services: Psychological Health Sheffield engaged me to review its services to working-age adults with mental health problems.  Interviews with key stakeholders within and outside the service, a vision development workshop with psychological service staff, a review of the professional literature and policy issues, and benchmarking against other similar services elsewhere, formed the basis of a report recommending a development strategy.
