Psychology and Technology

Technology presents huge opportunities and challenges in relation to psychological health. Psychological skills and concepts can help maximise the benefits of technology.

Computerised psychological therapy
is an innovative solution to the limited and uneven availability of appropriately trained therapists. I have worked with Ultrasis to investigate the effectiveness and acceptability of Beating the Blues in everday clinical practice, as well as contributing to the evaluation of its efficacy and cost-effectiveness in a randomised, controlled trial. This work has informed the National Institute for Clinical Excellence's initial appraisal and subsequent recommendation of computerised cognitive behaviour therapy.

Telephone headsets exemplify technology whose use has complex psychological consequences. Whilst ubiquitous in call centres, their use by office workers who combine extensive telephone work with other tasks is less well established.  Obvious efficiency benefits for multi-tasking could have additional psychological effects for good or ill. I undertook an evaluation of this for Plantronics.
